Karl has been an artist his whole life, and from a young age he was passionate about bringing his ideas to life through the medium of pastry. His love for art supplies drove him to spend more of his allowance than he should have on them as a child, and it was in this way that he discovered his true passion. In order to further his knowledge and skill, he apprenticed at the California Culinary Academy and Masse’s Pastries in Berkeley under Chef Paul Masse. Later on, he traveled to Barcelona to experience Spanish pastry artistry firsthand by working with Pastisseria Marti.

In 2004, Karl returned to the Bay Area and was immediately recruited as an executive chef for B44: Catalan Bistro; there he developed a unique seasonal dessert menu. The following year, he joined Les Amis, a Michelin Guide 3 star restaurant. This opportunity allowed him to create innovative desserts with imaginative flavors, while still maintaining classic techniques. These experiences led to Karl being featured as a chef in APIAHF’s Food for Thought twice – 2007 and 2008.

2019 was a milestone year for Karl; he competed in Food Network’s Halloween Baking Championship, and won! From his childhood days of experimenting with art supplies to his professional experiences, Karl has embraced opportunities to refine his palate, hone his skills, and explore creative realms of pastry. His mentors have played an integral role in helping him reach the level of success he is at today. It is through their guidance that Karl has been able to bring his vision to life. He continues to strive for perfection in each piece he creates.
