If you\u2019re the parent of a teenager <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">who\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> on their way to becoming a new car owner, you\u2019re probably going to help them foot the bill of their first car purchase.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Let\u2019s get as much value out of the purchase as possible. There\u2019s <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.edelalon.com\/blog\/2022\/05\/a-teen-car-buying-checklist-how-to-help-your-child-pick-out-the-perfect-set-of-wheels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">a pre-buy checklist<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> to go through after your teen passes their test to ensure they get the best car for them, but it\u2019s also a good idea to pass on a few tips about car care and maintenance. Doing so will keep their first vehicle in the best condition for as long as possible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Don\u2019t Run the Battery Down<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Running down a car battery is horrifically easy to do. Short journeys, turning the vehicle on and off in short succession, and keeping systems running without <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">actually<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> driving the car can drain power away from the battery. Your teen might even get in the car one day <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> it won\u2019t go anywhere, thanks to a flat battery they never saw coming.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Of course, they probably already know a bit about keeping the battery in the best condition but remind them of the danger here. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A drained battery can be <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">an<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> expensive <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">thing<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> to replace, and seeing as you\u2019re likely to buy a second-hand car for your teenager, it\u2019s <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">likely<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the battery is old and more susceptible to power loss, too.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Chips in the Windows Need Addressing Immediately\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A chip on a car window should never be left, even if it looks small and is easy to forget. That chip could grow into a crack at any point, meaning windows may split, crumble, and fall in while the car is in motion. That\u2019ll immediately make the vehicle unsafe to use, and you don\u2019t want your teen on the roads with poor window integrity!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Make sure you hammer this point home for them. If there\u2019s a chip, they need to take the car in for <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/jiffyautoglass.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">windshield replacement<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, no matter how expensive the job may be. If they don\u2019t, the vehicle may become unusable, and they\u2019ll lose all sense of their independence. That\u2019s a total nightmare for a 16+ year-old!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Keep an Emergency Kit<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">An emergency kit should be in every car. If your teen hasn\u2019t prepared one for their vehicle yet, remind them of it again. There should be a few useful items, such as a flashlight, blanket, water, <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theaa.com\/breakdown-cover\/advice\/using-jump-leads\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">jump starters<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, and a spare tire.
