{"id":27088,"date":"2025-04-03T07:37:39","date_gmt":"2025-04-03T14:37:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edelalon.com\/blog\/?p=27088"},"modified":"2026-03-24T13:50:21","modified_gmt":"2026-03-24T20:50:21","slug":"what-working-from-home-taught-me-about-real-estate-priorities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edelalon.com\/blog\/2025\/04\/what-working-from-home-taught-me-about-real-estate-priorities\/","title":{"rendered":"What Working From Home Taught Me About Real Estate Priorities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I didn&#8217;t really see my home until I started working in it full-time.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I can also not forget our time during <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.edelalon.com\/blog\/2020\/03\/covid19-work-from-home-work-from-van\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">COVID 19<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">For years, it was just <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the place<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> I returned to at the end of the day. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I\u2019d<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> leave early, commute to work, and come back in time for dinner. The rooms were functional enough<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, the<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> layout worked\u2014at least in the context of a<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> \u201c<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">home base.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201d <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I never questioned whether the space <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">actually<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> supported my daily rhythm. Why would I? I spent most of my waking hours somewhere else.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Then came the significant shift.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Like many others, I was suddenly doing everything from home: working, leading teams, troubleshooting tech issues, cooking meals, parenting, and trying to maintain a bit of sanity. My kitchen table doubled as a desk. Conference calls happened from the hallway, where the acoustics were strangely better. And the bedroom became the only place where I could shut a door and think straight\u2014which, as you can imagine, made it hard to separate rest from responsibility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Within a few weeks, the cracks in my home setup began to show. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">My chair <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">wasn&#8217;t<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> ergonomic<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Even<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> though I had discussed <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.edelalon.com\/blog\/2023\/02\/gaming-chair-or-office-chair\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">about<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> chairs in the past<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Natural light only hit the living room for about an hour each day. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">And every time the dog barked or a delivery truck rolled by<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, my train of thought derailed<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">These may sound like small things, but when <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">they\u2019re<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> part of your <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">daily<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> environment<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, they add up<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">That\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> when it hit me: this space <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">wasn\u2019t<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> designed<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> for how I now needed to live and work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I began rethinking what I wanted out of a home\u2014not just aesthetically but practically. During Zoom calls, I started noticing little things in other <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">people\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> setups: built-in shelves, sliding doors that separated office space, light-filled corners perfect for deep focus. I started craving those details\u2014not out of envy but because I finally understood their <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">function<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Eventually, casual browsing turned into research. I began looking at listings differently\u2014not just at the number of bedrooms or price per square foot, but how the space <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">was <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">actually<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> laid out<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Could this room double as a studio? Would that den block enough noise for meetings? How close is the kitchen to where <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I\u2019d<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> set up my laptop?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">During that process, I stumbled <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">on<\/span> <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.propertymesh.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Propertymes<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">h.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">c<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">a<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u2014a<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> site that does a solid job surfacing homes with these kinds of considerations in mind.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Instead of just glossy kitchen counters or drone shots of rooftops, I appreciated how easy it was to scan for practical features: natural light, dedicated office space, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">flexible<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> floor plans. It <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">wasn\u2019t<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> about fantasy\u2014it was about function.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I also found one of the best ways to improve listings as well using AI tools like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.phixer.net\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phixer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These take all of the work out of the editing process and means that you can just get on with producing the highest quality listing that you can. It&#8217;s such a massive shortcut, I can&#8217;t believe more people aren&#8217;t doing it. It means that you can essentially run a real estate business from your bedroom, if you want to, as long as you have the right tools to support you and a decently powered computer. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">That\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> what working from home taught me. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A good space <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">doesn\u2019t<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> just look good\u2014it supports how you live and <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">how you<\/span> <em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">think<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. It helps you focus, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">it<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> protects your boundaries, and <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">it<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> gives you room to grow into <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">whatever\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> next.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I still love my home, but now I look at it\u2014and every future space\u2014through a sharper lens. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Because the<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> way we live has changed<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.
