The growth in popularity of ride-share services has been nothing short of extraordinary over the last decade or so. In around a decade (ever since apps made them possible), they\u2019ve gone from minor startups to multinational businesses providing a significant proportion of the world\u2019s transport.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, while they might be convenient, they also <\/span>come with<\/span> various downsides. Yes, you can order a taxi on your app, and that\u2019s nice, but these issues with these services are making many people believe that conventional car ownership will last far longer, perhaps into the 2050s, instead of ending this decade.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Inconsistent Driver Quality<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

One issue is inconsistent driver quality. When you go to a regular taxi firm, you know you\u2019re getting people who have been doing it as their job for many years. The taxi company employs them to provide a service, and then they hone their skills to ensure they boost the firm\u2019s reputation.<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s not always the case with ride-sharing apps. Many of these companies hire <\/span>members of the public<\/span> looking for side gigs, and they may not provide the service quality riders expect. These additions can be annoying and detract from the quality of the service, especially when using lesser-known options. Driver Exploitation Issues<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

At the other end of the spectrum, there are driver exploitation issues. Because many of these drivers are self-employed in the eyes of these ride-sharing apps, they don\u2019t always earn much money. Because of this, they could <\/span>be paid<\/span> less than the minimum wage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Apps spend a lot of money <\/span>making the case that they<\/span> compensate their drivers well<\/span><\/a>, but their incentive is always to offer the cheapest service and pay as little as possible.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Driver exploitation is <\/span>particularly bad<\/span> when drivers <\/span>have to<\/span> wait long periods between rides. When this happens, their hourly rates fall further.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Data Privacy Issues<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Data concerns are also an issue when using ride-sharing apps. <\/span>Many of these services collect personal information, like <\/span>your<\/span> travel habits and payment details, which someone else could exploit <\/span>at a later date<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mishandling of data<\/span> is a <\/span>serious issue<\/span><\/a> and something<\/span> that can be hacked.<\/span> Already, privacy issues have arisen through the poor data handling practices of many of these firms, so who\u2019s to say it won\u2019t happen again?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Limited Accessibility<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Finally, many of these services run into limited accessibility issues. It\u2019s not easy for people with disabilities or older adults to take advantage of these services in their areas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rural or less populated areas also benefit little from this. <\/span>These areas <\/span>simply<\/span> don\u2019t offer sufficient business for these ride-sharing apps, so there\u2019s little point in them setting up operations.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
