{"id":862,"date":"2009-07-05T20:26:59","date_gmt":"2009-07-06T03:26:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/edelalon.com\/blog\/?p=862"},"modified":"2024-11-15T10:41:01","modified_gmt":"2024-11-15T18:41:01","slug":"pasta-cheap-eats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edelalon.com\/blog\/2009\/07\/pasta-cheap-eats\/","title":{"rendered":"Pasta = Cheap Eats"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Many of us are trying to find different ways to feed our families during this economic time.\u00a0\u00a0 I have a few friends who have eliminated \u201cgoing out\u201d to eat from their budgets.\u00a0 Denny\u2019s is no longer an option for some.\u00a0\u00a0 I\u2019ve eliminated fast food from our budget too.\u00a0 It\u2019s been a hard time especially since I crave a juicy hamburger.<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday nights are pasta night at our place.\u00a0 The process was to buy a jar of sauce and boil a packaged box of noodles.\u00a0 Today, I\u2019ve cut down our budget by making my sauce and noodles from scratch.<\/p>\n<p>At first I was hesitant in making everything from scratch because it breaks away from a routine.\u00a0 I figure change is good and making my own pasta was a good one.<\/p>\n<p>You know how adobo tastes really good on the second day?\u00a0 The same goes with pasta sauce.\u00a0 I\u2019ll start off the night before with my favorite recipe for red pasta sauce:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ingredients<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1 pound ground round beef<\/li>\n<li>1 pound ground pork<\/li>\n<li>2 large onions, chopped<\/li>\n<li>4 cloves garlic, pressed<\/li>\n<li>5 large cans tomato paste<\/li>\n<li>10 tomato paste cans water<\/li>\n<li>4 tablespoons Parmesan<\/li>\n<li>1 1\/2 tablespoons salt<\/li>\n<li>6 leaves fresh basil or 1 tablespoon dried basil<\/li>\n<li>1 tablespoon dried oregano<\/li>\n<li>1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Directions<br \/>\n<\/strong>In a large saucepan over medium heat, saute the ground beef and pork until brown. Drain off excess fat. Add the remaining ingredients and stir until smooth. Cook for 3 to 4 hours on medium heat, stirring often to prevent scorching.<\/p>\n<p>I leave the sauce on the stovetop overnight to cool down.\u00a0 Putting how pots full of stuff in your refrigerator will increase your power bill because it\u2019s working harder to cool off that pot.\u00a0 I put the sauce in the refrigerator the next morning.<\/p>\n<p>The noodles are from scratch too.\u00a0 When you look at the box of premade noodles, the only ingredients are: flour, salt, semolina flour, egg, and water.<\/p>\n<p>There are some recipes out there that are just flour and water:\u00a0 2 cups flour to 1.5 cups water.\u00a0 I forgot where I got mine from and now it\u2019s all muscle memory:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ingredients<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2 cups flour<\/li>\n<li>2 eggs<\/li>\n<li>2 tablespoons olive oil<\/li>\n<li>2 teaspoons water<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>(notice how everything is in 2?)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Directions<br \/>\n<\/strong>Mix all the ingredients together until it makes a moist dough texture.\u00a0 Roll out the noodles into thin.\u00a0 Cut into noodles.<\/p>\n<p>I have an Imperia manual pasta maker.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/edelalon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/pastamaker.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-861\" title=\"Pasta Maker\" src=\"https:\/\/edelalon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/pastamaker.jpg\" alt=\"Pasta Maker\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.edelalon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/pastamaker.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.edelalon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/pastamaker-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.edelalon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/pastamaker-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nInstead of hand rolling and cutting the dough, I just run it through this machine and out comes fresh pasta.<br \/>\nWhat\u2019s really cool about fresh pasta is that it only takes 3 minutes to cook versus the 12-15 minutes to cook dry pasta.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Many of us are trying to find different ways to feed our families during this economic time.\u00a0\u00a0 I have a few friends who have eliminated \u201cgoing out\u201d to eat from their budgets.\u00a0 Denny\u2019s is no longer an option for some.\u00a0\u00a0 I\u2019ve eliminated fast food from our budget too.\u00a0 It\u2019s been a hard time especially since [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":861,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"tdm_status":"","tdm_grid_status":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[108],"class_list":["post-862","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-food","tag-recipe"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.5 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Pasta = Cheap Eats &#8226; Edel Alon<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"Hello, we have well thought out reading topics on technology, leadership, project management, food, weddings, and tools to help your daily life.
