Vehicle Maintenance Tips you Can’t Ignore

If you don’t use your car very often, then there are a few things you need to do in order to make sure that it stays in top shape. If you don’t, then you may find that your car ends up being run into the ground, which is the last thing you need.

Keep your Battery Healthy

One of the first things you need to do is try to take steps to keep your battery healthy. Battery issues are the top cause of breakdowns, and they can happen at any time. If you don’t use your car very often, then you may find that they happen even more, which is the last thing you need. If you want to help yourself here, then one of the first things you need to do is try to check your battery health. Your car probably has a built-in battery monitor you can keep an eye on, but if it doesn’t, then you can always keep your battery topped up by using a battery maintainer. This is a good way for you to charge your battery on the go, and it will also make your life a lot easier overall. The most common cause of a flat battery would easily be leaving the lights on after you have charged it. Newer cars tend to turn the lights off with the ignition, but if you have an older car, then there is a high chance that you don’t get this feature, so make sure that you take steps to try and counter that by keeping an eye on your battery and how it is running.

Your local mechanic can help with things like this, so be sure to get in touch with them to find out how they can help to keep your car on the road.

Check your Oil

Changing your oil regularly is the best way for you to improve your engine’s performance, and it also allows you to extend the life of your car. As a general rule, engine oil contains a number of additives, which help to enhance its overall performance. This includes anti-wear agents as well. If you don’t change your oil regularly, then it is possible for the additives to break down, and this will make your engine far less efficient. You can also visit a local garage to get your MOT done, which is a good way for you to get your levels checked.

Monitor your Brakes

The brakes on your car are checked annually by doing an MOT test. Brae pads, discs and even calipers are most likely the issue when it comes to your problems If you happen to hear any strange sounds when you are breaking in your car, or if you feel as though your vehicle is taking a long time to slow down then this is a big sign that you should get your vehicle checked out. If you want to help yourself here, then it’s wise for you to try and make sure that you are getting the issue assessed and that you are also getting the brake pads evaluated by an approved garage. This is an excellent way for you to get the result you need, and it can make a significant difference.

Check your Air Filter

The air filter stops engine debris or dust from entering your car’s engine. If you know that it is clogged up, then this can lead to engine damage, which is the last thing you need. If you want to help yourself here, then you need to open the bonnet and then locate the air filter box. You will usually notice that this is a plastic box that is connected to the engine via a pipe or a hose. You can unfasten the clips, or you can look at the fixings that hold the top on. When you do this, you will find it easier to get the result you need. The air filter itself is usually a plastic frame that surrounds a fabric mesh. If you can see that it looks pretty clogged or if it’s especially dark in color, then this is a big sign that you need to start seeking a replacement as soon as possible.

Check your Fluids

Transmission fluid, especially for automatic cars, is something you need to stay on top of if you can. When maintaining your vehicle, you will be told when things need doing, so you need to keep on top of it. Do take the time to check your washer fluid as well. If you run out of washer fluid, then you may not have the ability to clean your windscreen on the go. Sometimes this can be an offense, and one that is entirely avoidable. You also need to try and check your washer fluid regularly to make sure that it doesn’t need cleaning. If you can do this, then you are bound to get the result you need overall.

Tires

Another thing you need to make sure that you check your tires. You need to check your tire condition as well as your pressure levels. Even though a flat tire might not be evident after you have done a quick visual check, other issues could well need a closer look. It’s recommended that you check your tires as they can deflate over time. Look out for any cuts and also take note of the pressure in your vehicle handbook. If you can take note of things like this, then you will find it easier not only to make sure that you are checking your tires regularly while also making sure that you are not ignoring issues when they arise. If you aren’t sure if your tires are in good condition or not, then one thing you can do is try and visit your local mechanic. You can also inflate your tires at a local garage to make sure that they are not running flat. Having a tire gauge in your car is also a good thing to have.
