WPtouch

Mobile applications are part of what people look for in websites…in particular your website. Most websites don’t look that great on mobile phones or other devices because of the small screens. I was using Carrington Mobile for the past 3 years and I figured I should look for another solution.

I stumbled on WPtouch by BraveNewCode. Like the Carrington theme, this plugin converts your WordPress website into a cool looking webpage for mobile devices.

There are a few things I really like about this theme:

  1. The pictures are adjusted to fit the width of the device.
  2. It looks like an iPhone app.
  3. Easy to install.
  4. The default settings are great.
  5. Easy to use.

Arthemia Premium 1000px

I decided to increase the width of my website to 1000px. This took a while to find all the proper widths in the Arthemia CSS file but I did it. One of the things I’m looking for is a way to show more than 12 random posts at the bottom. I’ve played around with the footer code but it doesn’t seem to want to come up.

For those of you who want to modify your theme, you need to make sure you modify:

Adobe Acrobat: PDF Files Not Loading in Browser

0

I recently had the problem where my web browser will not open up Adobe Acrobat PDF files would not open in my web browser and also had the problem where my Word 2010 would freeze my computer when creating a PDF file.

I tried:

  • Reinstalling the browser.
  • Reinstalling Adobe Acrobat.

In the end, the solution was to disable Enhanced Security. Open Adobe Acrobat, click on Edit, then Preferences. Go to the Advanced Security category and uncheck Enable Enhanced Security.

Wedding Program

I was looking around for wedding programs and I couldn’t find a good example of one that would fit my needs. Also, I didn’t like the way most wedding programs out there didn’t list the entourage.

Here’s a Wedding Program for you to use if needed. As a heads up, it’s really simple.

Elmo Cake Pops

Elmo Cake Pops Header

Once in a while I’ll test my skills and push my limits beyond something I know nothing about. This round was cake pops. Cake pops seem to be the new trend instead of cupcakes. The first one I had came from Starbucks. I had to investigate.

My hypothesis was that the cake pops were made from a mold in the shape of balls. My other guess was that the cake pops were deep fried balls like doughnut holes. As I dug deeper, turns out that the proper way to make cake pops are to make a regular cake, crumb the cake, and add icing. I’m pretty sure I did this is my crumbs from other cakes but never thought of putting it on a stick.

My research pointed me to Bakerella where she lists her recipes. One of the coolest things I’ve seen are Elmo Cake Pops by Bakerella. I decided to push myself in (a) making cake pops and (b) going difficult to make Elmo Cake Pops.

My Methods
Instead of following step by step directions, I went with the beat of my own drum and chose to do strawberry cake with cream cheese icing. If you’re not a risk taker, you might want to go red velvet cake. Another thing I did different was not to use the whole can of frosting. Instead I used about 85% of the can…the rest is still sitting in my refrigerator.

I could not find the candies that Bakerella used for the eyes so I used M&M’s. When I do eyes, I use Wilton’s black Sparkle Gel. I do this because I like how they sparkle in the light.

To make the cake balls, I measured 2 tablespoons of crumb/icing mix to stay consistent for the whole batch. The measuring spoon also serves as a tool to help make them round. If I were to do this again, I might buy a meat ball maker.

My last note, I put the pops in the freezer before putting on the candy shell. By putting them in the freezer it made the melts solidify faster and made a furry effect on its own. I didn’t have to drizzle melt on top. After doing this, do not put the pops back in the freezer because it will generate moisture when you take them out.

Here are some pictures.

Arthemia and WordPress Compatibility

3

Arthemia Premium theme with WordPress 3.1.3 works.

Update
There was a bug where I couldn’t use the Admin Bar where the Edit Page or Edit Post would disappear and only show Edit Category. This bummed me out because my other sites have this feature. I took some time to do a complete restore of the Arthemia theme. That didn’t work. I updated WordPress again. That didn’t work.

It turns out the the Video or Random Posts does not work well with the code. In turn, I stopped using the Video and Random Posts on my pages and posts. To do this, go to your Arthemia Options and then look under Under Single Post Page Settings and select Hide Video and Random Post Gallery.

This will add the Edit Page or Edit Post and Shortlink feature back to your pages and posts.

Tracing Roots

I’m doing some research to find a distant relative. Please let me know if you’re related to the person in the picture. Here’s a description of who he is:

Name: Felipe Sese

Known History: Moved from the Philippines to Hawaii. Jumped on a ship in Hawaii and landed in New York.

Contact me if you have any information or if you think you might be related. Maybe some of you Sese’s in Hawaii can help me out.

Excel Task List

1

I’m in the process of making a new binder/planner system for me. It was missing a task list to help me manage tasks.

For a little history, I have been shopping around for the ultimate planner. I realized that I’m too picky and could not conform to another person’s standards. The other part was that I couldn’t justify getting a planner that contained a blank calendar and pages for contact information.

It’s almost set. I’ll release it to you once it’s all done. For now, you can have the task list. Here’s my logic behind my system. The first column is the status–in progress, delegated, canceled, etc… Pick your symbols and roll with it. The second column with the triangle is my priority system…triangle, delta, change. Or something like that because you have to constantly prioritize and juggle things around. In this box, you can put numbers or letters.

The rest is self explanatory. Oh, I forgot about the main box at the top labeled Category. I use category for things like home, work, school, shopping, or other.

Enjoy! Comment on what you like or don’t like. I’m constantly changing these to fit my needs. I’m interested to see what you’re lists look like.

Robert’s Rules of Order

2

I realized that I’ve been using Robert’s Rules of Order for 20 years now. I still remember my grade school teacher handing me a binder on how to run a meeting, what to do when someone is out of order, how to handle a motion, how to make a motion, etc…I always pictured people in curly wigs making motions.

Now why would someone use RRO? RRO help out in running meetings especially if there are a lot of debatable  items that your organization needs to cover. These are usually touchy subject matters where you still want people to get along in the end if things don’t go their way. It’s always good to learn RRO just in case you attend a public meeting where they follow the strict rules of RRO.

How strict have I gone with RRO? I remember when I was president of the science club when I was in 11th grade. In order for me to “quiet” a member down I used really strict RRO to a point where the member did not have a lot of time to speak. Mind you, if you use these tactic, be prepared to deal with people who shout out, “Point of Order” at every moment possible.

I’ve been lucky in the past years where I’ve worked in groups where people don’t really disagree when voting on matters. It’s one of the best feelings ever. However, it hurts a little when one person disagrees. Democracy, right? I have a hard time from drawing away from RRO even when it’s not needed. The meetings are funny but kind of cute.

Is there another solution? It’s called Consensus. I think I’ve seen it in use once. The meeting seemed a little longer but passing on items was achieved faster. Have you used Consensus? Let me know how it went.
